União Brasil announced today (2) that Senator Soraya Thronicke (MS) is the party’s pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. Soraya’s name, however, must be confirmed at the party’s national convention. Party conventions to formalize candidacies must take place until August 5th.
The pre-candidacy of the senator from Mato Grosso do Sul occurs after withdrawal of the party’s president, federal deputy Luciano Bivar, to run in the October 2 election. “I decided to go back and stay in the Federal Chamber,” he said in a speech at the União Brasil state convention in Pernambuco, his electoral stronghold.
Soraya Thronicke is a first-term senator, elected in 2018 by the PSL, then the party of President Jair Bolsonaro. After the PSL merged with the Democrats, creating União Brasil, parliamentarians more aligned with Bolsonaro left the party to join the president in the PL, but Soraya remained in the party, showing loyalty to Bivar. She is a lawyer and businesswoman.
Article changed at 18:18 to change the deadline for party conventions which is August 5th and not August 15th, as previously published.
