President Luis Lacalle Pou attended this Friday, July 29, at the headquarters of the Broad Front, to meet with the authorities and deliver the preliminary draft of the social security reform. There, he considered that it is a sustainable, gradual and more supportive plan, but that political agreements must be reached for its realization. “All pension systems in our country are included in the reform,” he said.
The president, accompanied by Rodolfo Saldain, president of the Committee of Experts on Social Security, was received by the president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira; the vice president, Verónica Piñeiro, and the political secretary, Daniel Mariño.
After the meeting, Lacalle Pou explained to the media present that this bill requires the widest possible consensus and hence the importance of sharing it with all political actors. He asserted that it is sustainable, gradual and more supportive, and that the transition to the new system will end in 20 years.
He also pointed out his moral duty with this issue and that he cannot “look to the side”, since it is an urgent problem for Uruguayans. He also informed that it was his will that the document be made public after all the political parties had received it. From now on, he said, the necessary political agreements must be reached so that the document is enriched, without distorting it.
Saldain and the Minister of Labor, Pablo Mieres, will request a meeting with the Confederation of Business Chambers and the PIT-CNT, as well as the different parastatal banks. In this way, we will try to achieve the greatest discussion in pursuit of the objective.
Lacalle Pou stated that this draft includes all the country’s retirement systems: the Social Security Bank (BPS), the different savings banks and the Retirement and Pension Service of the Armed Forces. In this sense, he said that both the Caja de Profesionales and the Bancaria are in a complicated situation, so the urgency is for the entire structure in the medium term and, on the one hand, in the short term.
