Rodríguez was branded an “interfering” by the Nicaraguan regime, after the nominee assured in the Senate that, if appointed, he would continue to demand freedom for the political prisoners of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, as well as respect for democracy and the cessation of human rights violations.

Jorge Agobian, correspondent for the Voice of America (VOA) at the White House, stated through a post on Twitter that a spokesman for the National Security Council (NSC) remarked to him that despite the withdrawal of the « approval” to Rodríguez of the Ortega regime “at his confirmation hearing, Rodríguez faithfully and respectfully reiterated US policy.” and, therefore, the support remains latent.
On July 28, the regime of Daniel Ortega withdrew the approval granted to the candidate Hugo Rodríguez as ambassador of the United States in Nicaragua, considering that he made “interfering statements against the country in disregard of the principles of international law.”
Dennis Moncada, chancellor of the Nicaraguan dictatorship, appeared at a surprise conference stating that they would not allow any diplomat to “disrespect, offend, humiliate, threaten, star in or be a factor of interference or interventionism in the internal affairs of our country.” In addition, he indicated that this communication was addressed to the State Department and Ambassador Sullivan.
The candidate for ambassador of the North American country had promised before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to continue denouncing the abuses of power by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
“I promise to work with Congress, inter-institutional colleagues and international partners to press for the return to democracy, respect for human rights and the freedom of political prisoners in Nicaragua,” said the applicant.
