The renowned Nicaraguan writer and political exile Gioconda Belli notified about the veto of its participation in the second edition of the Celebremos Iberoamérica festival to be held in Madrid, Spain, between September 19 and 25, 2022.
The poet, persecuted by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, stressed that this Monday morning, August 1, she received a phone call from representatives of the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) to inform her that the charge d’affaires of the Nicaraguan dictatorship pressured them to eliminate their participation.

Through her social networks, Belli explained “that the Nicaraguan business manager in Spain has vetoed my inclusion in this Festival. She said that I did not represent Nicaragua. I do not represent those who govern us, obviously, and I am very honored not to represent that invented country that they represent.
The human misery of wanting Nicaraguan artists to be the only ones to pay homage to them, reveals their absurd tantrums and their jealousy.
The directors of the Festival would have invited Belli in the first instance to be part of the Conversation: The writing that travels, which would take place on September 21 at the Circuit of Fine Arts in the Spanish capital.
The event is an initiative that encompasses cultural and artistic aspects, focused on literature, cinema and gastronomy, also promoted by the embassies of the 22 countries that are part of Ibero-America.

Belli, a recognized critic of the human rights violations perpetrated by the Nicaraguan dictatorship, made it clear that she understands “the diplomatic position of the OIE and I do not claim them. Nor was it someone from that organization who spoke about Cuba and Venezuela. He was someone who knows about those situations. The OIE is dedicated to culture. I shouldn’t have to go through this.”
The Nicaraguan writer, in previous statements, stated that the Nicaraguan presidential couple handles a well-studied psychological profile, especially by Rosario Murillo who seems to “use the methods of Nazi Germany.”
In an interview conducted by Spanish Television to the program “En Portada”, the novelist described Rosario Murillo as a “manipulator and liar”. She noted that she appears to be the mouthpiece of the regime’s propaganda that she “went to some training to study the Goebbels methods” used during Adolf Hitler’s Germany.
Belli alludes to the policy implemented in the propaganda of Joseph Goebbels and the Nazis that ordered the censorship of any media that opposed the party. Likewise, he was inclined to stereotype his opponents, generate distracting effects and silence his opponents under any excuse.
