The National Government opened the tender for the project of Canal del Dique, one of the river works of the Fifth Generation (5G) infrastructure program. The announcement was made by Marta Lucía Ramírez, vice president and chancellor, during an event in Cartagena.
This work will provide solutions to 20 municipalities of Sucre, Bolívar and Atlántico.

“This work is emblematic, one of the most important 5G projects in our country. It is the most significant environmental project in Latin America, showing that Colombia is taking the leadership in the region with the issue of sustainability. We are going to have an infrastructure that will generate very positive changes”, Assured Ramírez, during his speech.
At the event, it was announced that the pre-specifications are already published, which will be subject to observations until December 27. The publication of definitive specifications is foreseen at end of january 2022 and that the work be awarded in the middle of next year.

For his part, Manuel Gutiérrez, president of the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI), He stated that this project is going to have more impact than any other in Colombia in the last 50 years. “It will be very important that we attract interested parties, that we have a plurality of bidders, it is a complex project with more than $ 2 billion of investment in Capex“, he pointed.
It will also create an environment conducive to fishing, tourism and navigation activities and will recover degraded ecosystems, especially in the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park.
This is the second river project to be awarded by this Government, framed in the first wave of Bicentennial Concessions, or Fifth Generation, after the Magdalena River APP.

The Canal del Dique project has a total length of 115.5 km, which include the waterway between the municipality of Squid and the bay of Cartagena. The initiative has planned investments of $ 3.10 trillion (capex + opex), of which $ 2.19 trillion will be in capex and another $ 0.91 of opex (estimated figures as of December 2020).
The execution of works includes, among others, a system of locks and gates to prevent the uncontrolled entry of large amounts of sediment and flow into the system, thus controlling possible floods along the canal and allowing to maintain an active control over it. The execution will be done through a concession that will have a term of 15 years.
