Cepaz denounces that 74% of trafficking victims are women, girls and adolescents

The NGO Cepaz warns that one of the most serious problems of human trafficking is the lack of data, “there is no consolidated and reliable information on the cases”

The NGO Cepaz reported this Saturday, July 30, that 74% of the victims of human trafficking in Latin America are women, girls and adolescents. In this sense, its coordinator, Cristina Ciordia, clarified that although it is not a crime that only affects women, it does so disproportionately.

The information was revealed during an international seminar called “Trafficking in persons beyond our borders”, in which it was also detailed that 97% of the victims of this crime in the region remain in Latin America.

Ciordia warned that one of the most serious problems is the lack of data, “there is no consolidated and reliable information on the cases.” The coordinator classified the national response to this crime as “inscrutable and inaudible.”

In this sense, the coordinator of Cepaz advised that for an effective evaluation of the actions of the States, it is necessary to analyze if there is a coordinated regional response, “if it has a gender perspective, review the national response and if it includes a human rights perspective” .

A note published by the whistle points out that Verónica Mesa, a member of the NGO Mulier, highlighted that in Venezuela it is easier to find news of the arrest of people involved in trafficking networks than of the rescue of victims.

The data that the organization collects on the subject is obtained from monitoring because there are no official figures. He stressed that in 2021, 430 victims rescued from human trafficking networks were documented. While so far in 2022, 156 Venezuelans have been saved.
