MIAMI, United States. — The breakdown of block 2 of the Lidio Ramón Pérez Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), located in the town of Felton, in the province of Holguín, has become one of the main headaches of the Cuban regime in the midst of the wave of blackouts suffered by the population of the Island.
Behind the fire suffered by the unit at the beginning of this month, the Cuban authorities are trying to sow calm and optimism. However, the outlook seems bleak given the magnitude of the damage suffered by block two of the plant.
Until last Thursday the Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez arrived there, who tried to send messages of optimism in pursuit of the recovery of the plant.
“The country has intelligence and technical potential to organize and execute, in the shortest possible time, the recovery process of Unit No. 2 of the Lidio Ramón Pérez Thermoelectric Power Plant, in this town,” Ramiro assured during his visit to the thermoelectric plant.
In statements collected by the official newspaper Granmathe also deputy minister of the Cuban regime indicated that the process for the recovery of the damaged unit is complex and “includes the advice and participation of foreign specialists in everything that is pertinent.”
Likewise, he assured that the authorities will support the work “strongly in the possibilities of the nation so that, once the necessary resources have been imported, to manufacture what is needed.”
At the moment, those in charge of recovering the Felton thermoelectric plant are still working on the recovery and conservation of all the components that can still be used.
For his part, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Liván Arronte Cruz, explained that the first phase will be the controlled disassembly of the boiler, an action recommended by specialists due to the damage it suffered to part of the metal structures that they hold her.
The official explained that “it is still premature to give specific deadlines on the return of the unit to service, because the damage assessment has shown that, ahead, there is considerable work to be done; which also includes a residual life study through various tests, including metallographic tests, because the block has been in operation for 22 years and it is necessary to determine the real state of the rest of the boiler parts, in order to replace what require”.
