After several days of work to repair a breakdown, the traffic of vehicles was completely restored on the highway Holguin-Moa, an important route of the cuban east.
Road it had broken down last saturday due to a structural failure in a sewer, in the El Nispero area, in the Holguin municipality of Urbano Noris.
The breakage occurred specifically at the site known as El Obelisco, as a result of the collapse of the metal structures of the vault that supported the sewer. This fact forced to stop the passage of vehicles on the highway, considered “vital” in the area, “because it supports communication with the municipalities in the east of the province and the direct link with the city of Santiago de Cuba and its port, of great importance for the economy of Holguín”, as pointed out then a news dispatch.
After the ruling, specialized construction forces engaged in road rehabilitation work with a view to restoring road circulation “in the shortest possible time.” Finally, after 90 hours of uninterrupted work, the breakdown was repaired and the passage of vehicles could be restored this Friday.

Pavel Rodríguez, director of the Holguín Provincial Road Center, explained to the ACN that the damaged sewer had been built in 1940 and had 80 years of “uninterrupted exploitation”. “For its repair it was necessary to completely demolish it and rebuild the base with two rows of prefabricated concrete caissons that were assembled, in a period of just 36 hours,” he detailed.
According to the agency, the Holguín-Moa highway “is a work approved in the province’s investment plan for the year 2022, although different actions have been carried out for several years for its rehabilitation.”
For this reason, work is also carried out on this road “in the sections of the promenade with the greatest danger for vehicular traffic, fundamentally from Loma de la Gloria to El Manguito.” There, he points to the ACN“more than four kilometers that are very critical for road safety have been resolved and work is being done on sewers like this one that, due to their old age, will be intervened on a scheduled basis.”
The poor condition of the roads is a long-standing problem on the Island, causing delays and interruptions in vehicular traffic. In addition, it is one of the most repeated causes of accidents, along with violations by drivers and technical problems with cars.
