An Australian mining company announced this week the discovery of a 170-carat rough pink diamond, considered one of the “largest” of its kind ever found in the world and the largest pink diamond in the last 300 years, sources reported. the company.

The stone was discovered by the Lucapa Diamond Company at the Lulo mine, located in northeast Angola, an area rich in diamonds.

The diamond was baptized as “The Lulo Rose” (“Lulo’s rose”).

An extraordinary rarity

“Only one in 10,000 diamonds is pink. So you are certainly looking at a very rare item when you find a large pink diamond,” said Lucapa CEO Stephen Wetherall.

“The 170-carat pink stone is a historic discovery because it is believed to be the largest pink diamond found in the last 300 years,” Lucapa said in a statement.

At the Lulo mine, which has already produced the two largest diamonds ever found in Angola, including a 404-carat clear diamond, about 400 employees work.

Quoted by the Australian company, the Minister of Mining, Oil and Gas of Angola, Diamantino Azevedo, celebrated the discovery and stressed that “it demonstrates the potential and rewards of commitment and investment” in the “thriving diamond mining industry” of the country.

This find, according to Lucapa, is the 27th diamond of more than 100 carats found in the Lulo mine.
