Actions by the Canelones Police framed in the so-called “Basora II” operation and carried out in the last hours of this week resulted in the seizure of more than 400 thousand dollars, drugs, weapons and other items.
The first part of “Basra II” took place around 3:00 p.m. this Thursday. Members of the Canelones Police Response Unit were waiting outside a house when they saw a car leave, which they intercepted. The troops carried out a surveillance work with respect to the property located at kilometer 47 of route 36 since they were about to raid.
Two people were on board the vehicle. After conducting an inspection of the car, the agents found 158 thousand pesos and about 200 dollars and a Remington 223-caliber AR-15 rifle. The Canelones Police Headquarters indicated that the weapon was of Canadian origin and had its number filed.
The agents arrested the two older men and then continued with the search.
Inside the house they found a kilo of cocaine, 200 grams of marijuana and two other weapons. The weapons were a 38-caliber revolver with a requirement in Montevideo for theft in 2019 and an unnumbered shotgun. The detainees are at the disposal of the Las Piedras prosecutor, Verónica Bujarín.
Large amount of money seized
In addition to Las Piedras, the operation involved raids in the departments of Montevideo and Maldonado. In the intervention in the Fernandina entity, the agents managed to seize a total of 416 thousand dollars and 80 thousand pesos.
The officers also confiscated a high-capacity Falcon 400 model motorcycle and a 2022 Jeep truck, the Canelones Police Headquarters said. Likewise, three 9 mm caliber pistols were found.
At the time, a 39-year-old man with a criminal record was arrested. In total, between the two actions, four people were arrested (three men and one woman).
Leading criminal gang
This operation is the continuation of Operation Basra, which in its first intervention, around the end of May, allowed the capture of six people who later received a prison sentence. On that occasion, the agents seized six kilos of base paste, 131 marijuana plants and 770 thousand pesos.
According to what was indicated by sources of the case to Diario La R, the investigations indicate that the gang against which this operation was carried out is the leader in charge of supplying drugs to Las Piedras.
