Galicia inaugurates a museum in the birthplace of the father of Fidel and Raúl Castro

The house located in the town of Láncara (Galicia, Spain) where Ángel Castro lived, father among others of Fidel and Raul Castroopened its doors this Thursday as a museum dedicated to valuing the emigration Galician.

The opening of the also “Galician Emigration Interpretation Center” coincided with the 30th anniversary of the visit made Fidel Castro to that town in the municipality of Lugo, and also with the one carried out 17 years later by his brother Raúl, according to a office from the agency Latin Press (PL).

According to the media, among those present were direct relatives, such as Emma Castro, daughter of Ángel, as well as Mariela Castro Espin, daughter of Raúl, and Marité López, second cousin. Also the president of the Diputación, José Tomé Roca, the territorial delegate of the Junta de Galicia in Lugo, Javier Arias Fouz, the Cuban ambassador in SpainMarcelino Medina, and other local officials.

The Cuban ambassador highlighted in his speech the relevance that for the Caribbean Island it represents to have in Spain a place that serves as a reference for the historical links between Cuba and Galicia. Medina also made a special mention to Carlos López Sierra, Honorary President of the Association of Friendship of Láncara with Cuba, who for many years promoted the development of this work.

After cutting the opening tape and representing the family, Mariela Castro delivered a letter sent by her father in which she expresses her satisfaction with the purpose that has been given to the house. At the same time, the former Cuban president wishes that “… it serve to pay tribute to the children of Galicia who crossed the Atlantic and their descendants,” the publication details.

In this way, a cycle of several years of intense work is closed to achieve the remodeling and restoration of the house, and turn it into a reference center and archive of the great epic that was the Galician emigration to the Americas.

According to the Cuban agency, the Láncara City Council, the Lugo Provincial Council, the Lugo Confederation of Entrepreneurs and various Cuban institutions such as the Office of the Historian of Havana and the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples.
