Madrid Spain.- During the first six months of 2022, 4,871 traffic accidents were registered in Cuba, leaving a balance of 346 deaths and 3,565 injuries.
According to data revealed by the National Road Safety Commission and shared by the official Rebel Youththese figures are lower than those registered in 2017, 2018 and 2019 but higher than those of 2021.
For the first semester of 2022, all provinces increased accidents by 93% compared to the previous year, except for the Isla de la Juventud Special Municipality.
According to official information, the main causes of accidents are speeding, not respecting the right of way, the consumption of alcoholic beverages, technical problems and driver distraction.
The places with the highest occurrence of traffic accidents are: Plaza de la Revolución (49), Holguín (41), Santiago de Cuba (39), Playa (37), Habana del Este (30), La Lisa (25) and Santa Clara (24), specifies the informative note.
Pedestrian accidents also increased, says the National Road Safety Commission.
In addition to the causes mentioned by the Cuban authorities, the poor state of the roads and the country’s aging vehicle fleet, where cars over 50 years old, also influence the high number of accidents. To this are added the poor signage on the streets, the lack of lighting and the little road education.
Recently, the Cuban News Agency (ACN) reported that only in the province of Sancti Spiritus in these months there were 184 traffic accidents; mostly on roads in rural areas, mainly in the section between the town of Jatibonico and the city of Ciego de Ávila.
In this situation, he indicated ACNthe Provincial Road Safety Commission has established a plan of preventive measures for the summer months that include alcohol controls, technical inspections of cars and increased patrolling.
