Femicide: Rio PM develops app with panic button

Government of Minas opens public consultation on highway concession

A technological ally of women is being created by the government of Rio de Janeiro, through a mobile application, with the aim of combating violence against women and helping to reduce cases of femicide. The measure was announced this Thursday (28), after a meeting between Governor Cláudio Castro and part of his secretariat, at Palácio Guanabara.Femicide: Rio PM develops app with panic button

The application is being created by the Military Police, and has a support network, panic button and online occurrence record. In an integrated action with the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration, the PM will be called, through the emergency phone 190, by women with protective measures and whose perpetrators of violence are wearing an electronic anklet.

“We have created an application for women who are victims of violence, with a support network around 190. Together, a partnership will be made with the Department of Penitentiary Administration, of authors who have electronic anklets. These women have the panic button available, so that we can speed up the service in case of non-compliance with the protective measure. The app will also be used by women served by the Maria da Penha program, triggering the nearest police unit,” said Lt.

Currently, the state of Rio, with 92 municipalities, has only 14 Specialized Police Stations for Assistance to Women (Deam), which forces victims to travel great distances to register. Of the total staff of the PM, 10% are women. In the Civil Police, women represent about 24%, which sometimes makes it difficult for a female police officer to handle cases of violence.

“It is very important that an occurrence record is made when domestic violence occurs. Of the 55 cases of femicide that were registered this semester, only 18% of women had previous records against their aggressor. We know that the pandemic accelerated this cycle of violence. Most of the time, the record prevents femicide from happening, since one of the characteristics of this crime is the escalation of violence”, explained delegate Gabriela Von Beauvais, director general of the Department of Protection and Assistance to Women.
