The total attendance at the matches of the Women’s European Football Championship, with the final on Sunday between the hosts, England, and Germany remaining, has skyrocketed to 487,683 spectators, more than double what the 2017 edition registered in the Netherlands, which was 240,055.
This is reported by UEFA, which adds that almost 100,000 boys and girls have been part of that attendance record, and that 47% of all fans in the stadiums have been women.
Sunday’s final will be played at London’s Wembley Stadium, which has a capacity of more than 87,000 spectators, which will boost the total attendance of the tournament even more and break the record of spectators in a match of the final phase of the Women’s European Championship .
The highest attendance at a match in the final phase of the European Championship, both men’s and women’s, was the 1964 men’s final between Spain and the Soviet Union, which was played before 79,115 spectators at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, recalls UEFA.
So far the European Championship in England has broken, in addition to total attendance, the record for spectators in a tournament match: 68,871 in England-Austria (1-0) in the group stage at Old Trafford in Manchester.
The organization also informs that the singer and songwriter Becky Hill, winner of the BRIT-Award, will headline the final show. “This will be the first time that a live musical performance of this magnitude has taken place in the final of the Women’s European Championship,” UEFA highlights.
“After the final whistle, the captain of the winning team will enjoy a defining moment in her career when the UEFA President presents her with the trophy at Wembley,” it adds. EFE
