Ministry of the Interior strengthens approach to cases of domestic and gender violence

The general director of Gender Policies, Angelina Ferreira, stated that, since 2020, teaching hours and training instances in police response with a focus on human rights, domestic, gender, sexual violence against children and adolescents, and human trafficking have doubled. , trafficking and exploitation of people. In addition, she highlighted that in Uruguay there are 53 units specialized in the subject.

The Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, participated in the second anniversary of the National Directorate for Gender Policies, held on Wednesday 27. He was accompanied, in addition to Ferreira, by the Undersecretary of the Ministry, Guillermo Maciel; the director general of the Secretariat, Luis Calabria, and the director of the National Institute for Women (Inmujeres), Mónica Bottero.

Heber stated that the training of police personnel is important to deal with intra-family crime, which he classified as a scourge that is difficult to lower. “We have to pay attention and police attention with greater awareness,” he stressed.

Ferreira, meanwhile, pointed out that the objective of the directorate, in which 33 specialized professionals work, is to strengthen and rank the work that the Secretary of State carries out in matters of domestic and gender violence.

He pointed out that there are 53 specific units to deal with cases of these problems in the national territory and that 36% of the staff of the Ministry of the Interior is made up of women.

He also highlighted that, through the Educational Portal and in coordination with the National Directorate of Police Education, virtual training of civil servants was strengthened in order to provide theoretical and practical inputs to respond to needs.

The hierarch emphasized that projects, training and consultancies were developed with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the United Nations Population Fund (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) and the Geneva Center for the Governance of the Security Sector.

He also stated that workshops will be held to prevent human trafficking and smuggling and sexual violence in several departments in the interior of the country.

He also expressed that the challenges are to strengthen the approach in the police response on the subject, since it is a fundamental pillar for victims to access Justice, and to promote actions to improve the response.
