It calls on the citizens about the elections that we have in 2023 because the future of the nation is at stake, a model that we must change is at stake, a new democratic era that we have to begin to write the chapter among all citizens . Your position on impeachment?
Without a doubt, I believe that the Prosecutor’s Office has not only lost legitimacy, but is also not doing its job. The investigations do not reflect results that build trust with the citizenry. Political judgment is pertinent and healthy for the Republic. In addition, to transmit a signal to the citizens about the inaction that the institutions must guarantee justice in Paraguay. One can give a kind of appreciation based on the facts. If another nation has to show weaknesses, it puts the Prosecutor’s action in the spotlight.
In this political campaign, have you already debated ideas?
To some extent yes, but it is a weakness in general. It is true that in an environment of extreme polarization as we live in Western democracies, dialogue is not part of the process, the debate or the confrontation of ideas. Then we discuss the clothes they wear, the smiles, the faces. We attack personalisms but we do not discuss about solid elements which are the different positions that political actors and citizens can have.
How was the organization “Alma cívica” born?
Civic soul was born to strengthen civility. Ethical education and carrying out a philosophical content in political terms to discuss the country model and how the State works. We saw that there are many weaknesses. We work tirelessly in many sectors, in many districts, at the national level with young people who are active or aspire to enter politics. We had a hypothesis when we developed and designed the program and found a demand when we got to the field.
Is democracy in danger?
I think so. One of the foundations for the creation of Alma Cívica was that democracy, after the dictatorship, the first years, the political system needed citizen participation, a new political system had to be installed, an almost pedagogical process to do with the citizenry. Since then, democracy has never been as at risk as it is now. He needs us citizens more than ever so that we can participate in a second consolidation of democracy.
Isn’t the young man interested in politics?
Yes, the young man is disillusioned with politics itself like many citizens. It is not that they are not interested or not interested. He has broken his trust for years. Politics is not synonymous with service before the appreciation or assessment of the practice of the country. So when politics becomes a means only to favor a few, that generates a rejection in the citizenry, it ends up being a vicious circle. The moment we don’t get involved, we show that things are not going to change.
Are there people to make up a cabinet?
If it exists. Very good technicians in public institutions, eliminate the paradigm that says that all public officials are corrupt. There are many talented people, professionals with a vocation for service to carry out the great changes that are needed. But they must feel inspired by the leadership, we have a leadership that does not inspire, that is why many people do not dare to participate.
How is the health of the Concertación?
We’re pretty good. She always celebrated the positive. It is a very mature political space, it puts the coincidences above the differences. I am convinced that it will be government in the next 20 years, not just five. It is exercising a muscle that is asleep. We are talking to all the actors. The desire to collaborate always prevails, the commitment that the agreement has. We have to encourage ourselves to change if we want a different country.
