A group of experts from different disciplines, mostly economics and “with government experience”, He sent a letter to Colombian presidential candidates and pre-candidates with some suggestions on the problems that the next Republic President.
“This letter is based on the diagnoses and proposals that some 50 academics and experts have presented to us over the last year and a half on the most prominent issues in the national public policy debate.”Said the group.
(See: What do the presidential candidates propose in infrastructure).
And he added that his objective is that proposals can be taken into account in the government plans of the candidates, but does not seek a strategy.
Within the group of experts are Luis Fernando Alarcón, Jorge Humberto Botero, Carlos Caballero, Rosario Córdoba, María Mercedes Cuellar, Rudolf Hommes, Martha Lasprilla, Luis Fernando Mejía, Juan Ricardo Ortega and Evamaría Uribe, among others.
THE PROPOSALS
The group stated that it is concerned about the “precarious” fiscal situation from the country, “a public debt of more than 64% of GDP that requires immediate actions to mitigate the risks of a crisis“.
However, experts stated that there are several obstacles that make it difficult to reduction of the fiscal deficit.
“First, it is difficult to increase tax revenue under the current tax regime. Second, expectations for social spending are growing, given the high levels of inequality, unemployment and poverty. Third, this year’s vigorous growth, which is rebound, will not be repeated in 2022. With current policies, we will quickly return to growth rates below 4% per year, insufficient to correct the fiscal imbalance and respond to social pressure.“, they maintained.
(See: Criticism of Petro for the idea of stopping oil exploration in the country).
Thus, among the proposals they presented are:
– A strategy of diversification and sophistication of the supply of goods and services, so that there are more sources of income and good quality jobs.
– Greater competition in oligopolistic sectors They are controlled by a few large companies.
– That men and women get into decent jobs and productive in companies organized to reduce informality and the precarious employment situation “in which today there are more than 12 million Colombians able to work“.
(See: Inflation, elections and rates, challenges of 2022 according to Corficolombiana).
They also called for work to improve social security, taxation, acceleration of economic growth and the energy transition; and fight against corruption and state ineffectiveness,
“Facing the challenges requires enormous economic and institutional changes, which can only become a reality with a visionary, bold and creative government that knows how to win the support of the private sector and citizens, and that takes advantage of the experience and knowledge accumulated by many people and entities that see the creation of a less unequal and more prosperous society as feasible“, they closed.
