They authorized the transfer of the elephant Kenya from Mendoza to a sanctuary in Brazil

Kenya is 41 years old, was born in 1981 and arrived at the former Mendoza zoo when she was only 4 years old

The Ministry of Environment of the Nation authorized the departure of the country from Kenya, the elephant of African origin that is in the former Mendoza zoo converted into an eco-park, in order to travel to a sanctuary located in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil , to which Pocha and Guillermina, two Asian specimens, were transferred in May of this year.

Resolution 321/2022signed by the head of the environmental portfolio, Juan Cabandié and published this Wednesday in the Official Gazette, provided that the transfer from Kenya can be done by land through the Puerto Iguazú border crossing.

The Ministry of Environment and Territorial Planning of the province of Mendoza, registered in the Single Public Registry of Wildlife Operators, will be responsible for carrying out the transfer to the Elephant Sanctuary of Brazil (SEB).

Kenya is 41 years old, she was born in 1981 and arrived at the former Mendoza zoo when she was only 4 years old.

The elephant of African origin was part of an exchange with the German zoo TierparkHagenbeck, being the only specimen of this species in Mendoza, detailed from the Ministry of the Environment of the province.

From a few months agothe elephant is being trained for the transfer to the sanctuary by the Ecopark Directorate of the province of Mendoza and a group of specialists from the Elephant Sanctuary of Brazil, together with the collaboration of the Franz Weber Foundation.

The Brazilian Elephant Sanctuary, in its 1,500 hectares, presents an appropriate biome for the species, It has large, completely natural enclosures with thickets and open areas covered with vegetation.

There the animals are provided with exceptional diets and have high-quality veterinary care throughout their lives.

It is divided into four well-defined sectors: Asian females, where Pocha and Guillermina are currently; African females where they await her in Kenya; African males and Asian males, where Tamy will go, the last elephant to move from Mendoza.
