Referring to the violence suffered by journalists, the Undersecretary for Human Rights, Population and Migration of the Ministry of the Interior, Alejandro Encinas Rodríguez, said yesterday that it is time to leave behind institutional zeal and discussions of who gets what and what is the competence of each one, in order to understand that a response from the Mexican State as a whole is required.
During the signing of a collaboration agreement with the government of Sinaloa regarding the protection of communicators and human rights defenders, he stressed that it is necessary to change the orientation of the protection mechanism for journalists and activists, so that it ceases to be a reactive and become preventative.
He explained in a statement that the agreement with the Sinaloa administration seeks to build instruments and capacities to reverse violence and threats against journalists through coordination between the federal and state governments.
Enrique Irazoque Palazuelos, head of the Unit for the Defense of Human Rights of the Ministry of the Interior, the body on which the protection mechanism depends, pointed out that a national and comprehensive policy that involves states and municipalities is urgently needed.
