Madrid Spain.- Cuban doctor Alexander Pupo Casas, who arrived in the United States last Saturday after a migration journey of more than two months, in conversation with Radio Television Marti He declared that he left the country “practically forced, because he had no plans to live outside of Cuba.”
“Not even when I graduated from my degree did I want to go on a mission. It was not among my plans, I wanted to become a specialist and provide health care on the island,” said the doctor, who had to make this decision, leaving behind his daughter, his grandmother and his father due to the harassment of the Cuban regime.
Regarding his migratory process, the doctor, specialized in neurology, reported that on May 8 he left on a flight to Kingston, Jamaica; without problems at the airport “except for one or another interrogation”.
“When I set foot in Jamaica I told myself, I know I’m out of danger, because even on the plane I was afraid,” said the doctor, a member of the Guild Medical Free Cuban.
After arriving in Jamaica, he began a migratory route that included illegal transit through 14 countries, until he reached the border between Mexico and the United States, at the Piedras Negras bridge.
“It was not until I crossed the Rio Grande on July 21 that the fear disappeared. (…) At certain moments I felt paranoid. I no longer knew who to trust,” said the man from Holguin.
Pupo, who is currently in Miami, further stated: “We landed at the Miami airport and I said to myself, gosh, I’m like I’ve been born again, in a totally different world than the one I’m used to seeing.”
“You don’t know how bad Cuba is until you set foot in another country… The development, the children in schools, the treatment, even when you’re a migrant. See how people can demonstrate, because we had to see a student demonstration in Medellín, Colombia, another world, ”she added.
Regarding his current situation, he explained that he has “a parole document, and on August 26 the first appearance before Immigration.”
Regarding his plans, he specified: “I plan to revalidate my title. Leaving Cuba only means a new stage in the struggle, because I don’t know how to lose, and I won’t have won until I see Cuba free”, he indicated.

In recent years, the doctor has harshly criticized the Cuban government, including organizations and institutions such as the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).
Due to his complaints, he was expelled from the neurology specialty in 2020.
He was threatened by State Security with a lynching order from the people. From April 27 to May 2, he lived under siege, with agents cordoning off his house.
