The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) chose Diego Alonso to succeed as of today the 15-year cycle of maestro Oscar Tabárez, at the head of the sky-blue national team.
Among the names used by the AUF board to propose the position to him was, firstly, that of the Argentine River Plate coach, Marcelo Gallardo, and then the equal Diego Aguirre in the Brazilian International squad in a reduced list of options.
One of the differentials for the final appointment is that it will have the presence in its coaching staff of Professor Óscar Ortega, who is currently the physical trainer of Atlético de Madrid.
Alonso, 46 years old, began his career in 2011 when he was in charge of Bella Vista, and then went to Guaraní from Paraguay, to what happened a year in Peñarol, in 2014 he moved to Mexico where he directed Pachuca and Monterrey and in 2019 he was hired by Inter Miami.
The AUF agreement with Alonso is for the four games ahead of the South American Qualifiers towards the 2022 world championship, against Paraguay away (January 27), Venezuela at home (February 1), Peru at home (March 24) ) and Chile as a visitor (March 29).
Its permanence will be conditional on reaching the quota for Qatar and in that case there will be a contractual extension until 2026.
The celestial is currently in seventh position outside the classification zone, with 16 units behind Peru and Colombia with 17, Ecuador with 23, Argentina with 29 and Brazil with 35.
