Both opponents are under house arrest, serving a sentence of 13 years for Arellano and nine for Vidaurre, for the alleged crime of conspiracy to undermine national integrity.

Before these 365 days of confinement, the opposition Blue and White National Unit demanded immediate and unconditional freedom for the two prisoners of conscience. “Today marks one year since the arbitrary and unjust detention of Jaime Arellano and Noel Vidaurre. They are INNOCENT! 365 days of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment,” Unab said through its Twitter account.

For its part, the Nicaraguan University Alliance (AUN) recalled that Arellano has health problems and still does not receive adequate medical care. “We demand his prompt release and unrestricted respect for his human rights. #FreedomNow He’s innocent!” he stressed.

Arellano, in poor health

On Monday, July 18, sources close to the Directorate of Judicial Aid, better known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, revealed that Jaime Arellano continues without receiving specialized and quality medical care to treat the deterioration of his health.

The source detailed Article 66 that a general practitioner from the prison clinic showed up at the house of the hostage of the dictatorship to “check him up”, but he only took his blood pressure and left, because he was under orders not to do anything else.

He also indicated that Arellano cannot walk and is lying down due to severe headaches and constant dizziness that he has had for several days.

Jaime Arellano and Noel Vidaurre were arrested on July 24, 2021, after both were “interviewed” at the Public Ministry (MP) where they would have been threatened with applying “Law 1055” or Sovereignty Law.

On August 29, 2019, Arellano returned to Nicaragua after spending nine months in exile in the United States, after his work as a political commentator was criminalized; he continued to carry out his work and was seen closely with the outlawed Citizens for Freedom (CxL) party.

Vidaurre intended to compete as a candidate for the Presidency of Nicaragua in the elections of November 7, 2021, where Daniel Ortega won for the fourth consecutive term.
