Some twenty flights were affected on Sunday morning by the intense fog at the Ezeiza international airport and at the Jorge Newbery airport, although both air stations are operationalairport sources reported.

In most cases, delays and deviations were recorded during the early morning and early hours of this Sundaywhen the fog had more intensity.

However, some of these cases were also due to the consequences of the so-called “domino effect” derived from the cancellations and delays last Saturday, especially in Aeroparque, also due to fog.

The international airport of Ezeiza registered seven affected flights this morning, of which only one had to be canceled, that of Air France from Paris, which was rescheduled; while five services are experiencing delays of between 40 minutes and two hours and only one had to be diverted, a Flybondi flight from Iguazú that was supposed to land at 2:50.

Why airports can operate in fog

Ezeiza
Ezeiza has category 3 for operationswhich enables the airport to maintain takeoffs and landings, even with minimal visibility, which is why the fog, despite being very intense at times, does not impede air movement and only those flights that do not have the necessary certification, they are forced to deviate.

To be able to operate in category 3 the certification of the aeronautical authority is necessary, not only of the airport, but also of the crews and aircraft.

In the case of airlines that do not have the corresponding certifications, they cannot operate, even if the airport is providing service in category 3.

The same happens with Aeroparque, which was recently enabled as a category 2which allows it to operate with a visibility of 300 meters, which allowed, for example, that last Saturday, when the fog was densest in the sector adjacent to the river, the metropolitan air station continued its operations without difficulties.

This situation is replicated this Sunday, when only 13 flights were affected this Sunday morning, six of them canceled and rescheduled, five that are in a delayed condition, but with landing shortly; and only two diverted, both from Aerolineas Argentinas, which were due to land at 6:40 am from Rio Grande and at 6:50 am from Rio de Janeiro.

The forecast indicates that the weather conditions will remain as beforeat least until this Sunday afternoon, when storms of varying intensity are expected.

In any case, and despite the fact that operations are maintained and few flights are affected, airlines recommend their passengers consult the companies’ websites or contact call centers to find out the status of services.
