On Friday, July 22, the “I am here” walk-around was held on the Hill, organized by the Western Users Organization with the support of the Health Division of the Montevideo City Hall. The event integrated the activities for the National Day for the Prevention of Suicide, which is commemorated every year on July 17.
300 people participated in this walk, starting from the Olympic stadium to the Cerro golf club.
The Municipality of Montevideo works on actions and policies to address and prevent suicide. In its strategic guidelines for the five-year period, it included attention to the most vulnerable populations, in order to improve their living conditions. Within this framework, the commune is working on an adolescent mental health project, which will be implemented in departmental polyclinics.
According to official data, in 2021 a rate of 21.39 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants was registered in Uruguay, which corresponds to 758 people.
