Ten injured and extensive damage due to the explosion of a building in Montevideo

Explosión en un edificio del barrio de Punta Carretas, Montevideo, Uruguay.

An explosion in a building in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo, left ten injured, two in serious condition, and numerous damages in the surroundings, authorities said.

The explosion, apparently of accidental origin and due to a gas leak, occurred around 09:00 in the residential neighborhood of Punta Carretas.

The National Director of Firefighters, Ricardo Riaño, said that the explosion occurred on the third floor and that it generated a shock wave that damaged some buildings in the area.

Local authorities specified that of the ten injured people, two seriously injured were rescued and are already hospitalized and receiving treatment. The rest had injuries of varying severity, most of them minor. The two people who are in serious condition are due to burns and carbon monoxide inhalation.

The two people most affected, he said, are a married couple who lived on that floor, both in their 60s.

Riaño assured that the precise causes of the event will be investigated once the debris is removed and the security of the place is guaranteed.
