They arrest a Nicaraguan with more than a ton of cocaine in Costa Rica

The Ministry of Public Security of Costa Rica reported the capture of a Nicaraguan surnamed Mojica Espinoza, 44, who is accused of transporting more than a ton of cocaine in a boat accommodated in coolers.

The Costa Rican authorities detailed that Mojica was the captain of the ship and had permanent residence status in the neighboring country. In addition to the Nicaraguan, they also captured three people with Costa Rican nationality; Torrentes, 41, Duarte, 35, and Fallas, 39.

The Vice Minister of Public Security, Martín Arias Araya, indicated that the anti-narcotics operation took place “120 kilometers south of the port of Caldera, in waters located off Cabo Blanco, North Pacific.” The four subjects were crewing a fishing boat with Costa Rican registration P-10478.

Arias classified the operation as “complex”, since it involved extensive inter-institutional and international coordination, which took three days. United States Coast Guard officers and members of the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) participated in the mission.

The Ministry of Public Security explained that the subjects moved the drug in several coolers where they carried a load of fish and under it were the cocaine blocks.

In addition, it reported that “the boat, along with the drug and the detainees, was brought to the Caldera Coast Guard Station, Esparza canton, Puntarenas, after which the judicial agents and Coast Guard officers began to count the drug and other proceedings, which allowed to determine that it was little more than a ton of cocaine.

The four alleged drug traffickers were brought before the Public Ministry in Costa Rica to prosecute them for the crime of international drug trafficking.

In the case of the Nicaraguan, the authorities indicated that since March 16 there was already an arrest warrant and referral to prison against him for the crime of attempted murder.
