US Congress votes against an amendment in favor of the Cuban regime

congresista, Rashida Tlaib

MIAMI, United States. – This Wednesday, the United States House of Representatives voted against an amendment presented by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (Democrat of Michigan) to grant unilateral concessions to the Cuban regime.

Tlaib’s proposal had 260 votes against and 163 in favor.

“Although Marxist dictatorships have their apologists within the Democratic majority, I am grateful for the support of colleagues from both parties who stood with the Cuban people in their fight for freedom,” declared Cuban-American congressman Mario Díaz-Balart (Republican of Florida) after knowing the result of the vote.

“Due to strong bipartisan support, we were able to defeat the granting of credits to the oppressors of the Cuban people,” he specified.

In a statement, he also assured that he would continue to oppose “any unilateral concession to the brutal and anti-American regime in Cuba. While hundreds of political prisoners remain behind bars, we cannot ease the pressure on a regime that uses its revenues to further oppress the Cuban people. The Cuban people will be free and I am proud of the United States Congress for standing with them today,” he finished.

Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 13th district, is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants. She became the first Muslim woman elected to the Michigan Legislature, one of the first two Muslim women in the United States Congress, and the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in that body.

Tlaib has been in the US Congress for two terms, since 2018.

Their website indicates that “he has always fought for what is right, even when it is not popular. For example, she was one of the first members of Congress to stand up to President Trump and demand accountability for his illegal and unconstitutional actions. She successfully led impeachment efforts against her, twice.”

In Congress, she is a member of the House Oversight Committee and is Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on the Environment. She is also a member of the House Financial Services Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee. In 2020 she became a ranking member of the executive board of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Tlaib and Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar were called by Trum “The squad” (The squad or The brigade). All four have attracted media attention for being at the forefront of the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party and for their run-ins with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
