Almost 200 traffic accidents in Sancti Spíritus so far this year

Accidente de tránsito, Sancti Spíritus

Madrid Spain.- In the province of Sancti Spíritus, in the center of Cuba, 184 traffic accidents have been registered in the first half of the year.

According to a report from the Cuban News Agency (ACN), this figure represents an increase of 32 more accidents compared to the same period in 2021. These accidents left a total of 12 fatalities and 146 injured.

Most of the events occurred on highways in rural areas, with the section between the town of Jatibonico and the city of Ciego de Ávila having the highest incidence, he told ACN Carlos Lorenzo Ruiz, head of the Detachment in the Provincial Traffic Unit of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR).

As the main causes, the official mentioned the distraction of drivers, who often talk on the cell phone while driving, driving with one hand, not keeping the regulatory distance and exceeding the speed limits.

As for the times when road accidents were most frequent, it indicates Wednesdays and weekends during the afternoon and evening.

According to the information, for the summer months the Provincial Road Safety Commission has established a plan of preventive measures that include breathalyser controls, technical inspections of cars and increased patrolling.

Since January of this year in Cuba They have registered more than 4,000 traffic accidents and more than 300 deaths, which represents a daily average of 27 accidents, two deaths and 30 injuries.

According to official data, this figure reflects growth compared to the years 2021 and 2020.

In addition to the aforementioned causes, the poor state of the roads and the country’s aging vehicle fleet, where cars over 50 years old, also influence the high number of accidents. To this are added the poor signage on the streets, the lack of lighting and the little road education.
