As the internal presidential elections (December 18) approach, polls of dubious veracity proliferate on social networks. Some of them paid by candidates to motivate their constituents and discourage competition.
Hugo Estigarribia, a former senator for the ANR and currently a member of the Coalition of opposition parties, stated that a problem that exists, precisely in national politics, is the credibility of the polls.
“You have to see the technical sheets, know where they are made, because if you are going to do a survey in the department of Paraguarí, the Colorado candidate will always win. But if you are going to take a poll in the department of Concepción, the liberal candidate is going to win,” he said.
The politician urges that the pollsters provide the very complete and detailed technical sheets of each job they carry out to know who the respondents are, if they are on the electoral roll. If the work is carried out in a general way, in a massive way, if they put all the candidates for the consideration of the respondent and more data.
“Who are those who do the polls, what political ideologies are they? They are independent? Or do they respond to some of the applications? If the interviewer does it at someone’s request? It’s very difficult to have all those details sometimes,” he commented.
Estigarribia warns that pollsters risk their credibility and their future if they lie or carry out “customized” surveys.
“It is an issue that must be taken into account. Like lawyers, there are some who make custom opinions and others who do not. I believe that surveys are indicators but it depends on who does them or how they do them. And if you have objectivity or not, ”he stated.
