Spain: Omara Portuondo arrives in Cartagena as a stopover on her farewell tour

The legendary Cuban singer Omara Portuondo He will stop this Tuesday at the La Mar de Músicas festival as part of his farewell tour of the international stages, where he will cover his discography, based on the bolero, the danzón and the habanera, sources from the organization reported.

Portuondo is one of the great exponents of Cuban musical art. With a soft voice and slow pace, the artist denotes a gift for people that age has not been able to stop. She has stories, hundreds of memories in which she dives to portray her life, comments the Spanish medium.

Her long career began in 1945 as a dancer at the famous Tropicana cabaret, but it was in song that she found her space from the golden age of traditional music in her country.

As a member of the D’Aida Quartet, along with Elena Burke, Moraima Secada and her sister Haydée, he enjoyed great acceptance on the Island and accompanied stars such as Édith Piaf, Pedro Vargas, Rita Montaner, Bola de Nieve, Benny Moré and Nat King Cole.

But it was from the 1970s onwards when his name became established with its own weight when he shone as a soloist and recorded albums like the acclaimed Words Y challenges with the Spanish label Nubenegra. Then the recording of the disc Buena Vista Social Club in 1996, produced by the American guitarist Ry Cooder, marked a before and after in his career.

From that moment she became the great lady of Cuban bolero and her voice began to be heard throughout the world. Precisely that disc, the Buena Vista Social Clubwas recently recognized as a “sound treasure” and included in the list of heritage objects to be safeguarded by the United States Library of Congress.

Two years later came the filming of the homonymous documentary under the direction of Wim Wenders, who recorded his performance at Carnegie Hall in New York. Before that, she went to La Mar de Músicas 1998, which held a Cuba Special and where the great lady of bolero performed alongside Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa, Juan Perro and Martirio, among others.

In 2019 it was announced that the Buena Vista Social Club diva was retiring from the international stage and the city that had welcomed her so many times said goodbye to her at the Cartagena Jazz Festival. But Portuondo still has the strength left for another great international tour.

In addition to the performance by the Cuban, which will begin at 11:00 p.m. in the Parque Torres-Paco Martín auditorium, La Mar de Músicas will host concerts by Muerdo in the Patio Antiguo del CIM, Riccie Oriach in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, and Mala Cotton at the Royal Yacht Club.
