In the early hours of this Mondaya man entered the house of the Argentine journalist Jorge Lanata, in José Ignacio, with the intention of robbing him, although he finally escaped from the house without taking anything, reported sources from the Prosecutor’s Office.
Four hours later, the police found the man and arrested him for “suspicious attitude”. Then they realized that he had “similar characteristics” to those who had entered Lanata’s house, according to what they had seen on the cameras.
This Tuesday he will have to testify before the Prosecutor’s Office, but he will have to do it on his own because he was released.
This aroused the inconvenience of the mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía.
“Today there was an event that worried me. Luckily it was resolved well in the first instance. A known thief, with a record, entered to rob Lanata, the Argentine journalist, in José Ignacio. The police, in a short time, thanks to the instruments that he already has the cameras, he was able to stop him. But what worried me about this is that: arrested, with a record, he goes to the Prosecutor’s Office and they release him to appear within 48 hours. That man will not be here anymore. We’re not going to be able to catch him.” he said after an act in commemoration of the Swearing-in of the Constitution.
Antía asked the Prosecutor’s Office and the Attorney General of the Nation to better coordinate these actions that “harm the country.” “We have nothing to do with this, but I think it’s important to make it public”explained the head of the commune.
In addition, he assured that the Argentine journalist “is going to speak well of the police, but in turn, he is going to speak ill of the Prosecutor’s Office”.
In any case, sources from the Public Ministry explained why the man was released. Since he was not arrested in flagrante delicto, that is, committing the crime, they have to set him free. Even if the detained man had been brought before the judge, the judge would have set him free, because it is something “technical”. In the event that he had been caught red-handed an arrest warrant would not be needed.
