Argimón: “In principle, the end of the war is not visible”

Argimón

Vice President Beatriz Argimón finished his trip within the framework of the Official Mission for the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for Ukraine and Russia, returning this Sunday. On the trip, she held various meetings with different authorities and hierarchies of both countries, all in the cities of kyiv and Moscow.

Argimón made a balance of his official visit where he was not very optimistic regarding the rapid resolution of the conflict and highlighted the “strength” of the citizens who have suffered the bombings. Asked if she saw a way out of this conflict, Argimón replied: “The scenario is complex.” “In principle, the end of the war is not visible,” she added later.

Regarding the Mission, he expressed in dialogue with Telemundo that: “We comply with what the IPU entrusted us: try to strengthen the dialogue between parliaments. It is the only delegation that both countries agreed to receive. We seek to strengthen dialogue initiatives in an area where much more dialogue is needed.

At a press conference, he anticipated that after this visit by parliamentarians “the possibility of dialogue between political actors in a European country opens up” to unblock the conflict. In addition to visiting the parliaments of both countries, the IPU delegation had “freedom” to exchange with society and residents of areas affected by bombing.

«When one was walking, he was thinking if what he was seeing happens to us in any department. That anguish in society. But also the strength of those who want to immediately rebuild the damaged places. A mixture of pain and strength forward that one values », he recounted.

Asked if she had felt fear while in the conflict zone, the vice president assured that “there was a lot of tension” in the place. “Especially when we were approaching bombing sites. We were able to visit spaces bombarded with neighbors and that mix of will to move forward and rebuild in the face of pain. That whole passage became very emotional », she recalled.

In another of the moments that he highlighted, he mentioned his entry into the Ukrainian parliament, “totally protected” with “sandbags” to avoid destruction in possible bombings. There, after the meetings, he had an informal dialogue with a Ukrainian legislator. «She tells me: ‘you will understand that I am resisting for my children and everyone’s’. He hugged me and started crying. One starts thinking: how much horror XXI century, it is assumed that there were things that were not going to happen to us anymore », he narrated.
