The Executive Branch ordered this Sunday the extension of the state of emergency in the agricultural and irrigation sector at the national level for 167 calendar days, in order to prevent the situation of vulnerability of the 2022-2023 agricultural campaign of small agricultural producers from being accentuated and to the food security of the Peruvian population.
Through Supreme Decree No. 012-2022, published in Legal Norms of the Official Gazette El Peruano, the extension will come into force as of Monday, July 18.
According to the norm, the Government considered that the price of fertilizers, which are mostly imported, continue to rise, which greatly harms agricultural producers.
He also explained that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has accentuated the rise in prices of important commodities such as oil, wheat, corn and soybean oil.
“The adverse effects of COVID-19, coupled with the different external threats that affect the constant increase in fertilizer prices worldwide, put at risk the normal development of agricultural activities and their value chain, which also affects the food safety of final consumers”, mentions the DS
As recalled, President Pedro Castillo had already declared a state of emergency in the sector on March 20, for 120 days. However, it has been decided to extend it in order to “prioritize the necessary conditions for the continuation of productive agricultural activities.”
