Maracana: 72 years after the last World Cup in Uruguay

Maracaná

It commemorates 72 years of the greatest sporting feat known to the sport of Uruguaythe mythical “Maracanazo” in the Maracana.

In the final of the World Cup, organized by Brazil, the local team was defeated by Uruguay by two goals to one. The echo had a global magnitude, in view of the fact that several newspapers throughout the planet gave Brazil as the winner, due to the level shown throughout the entire tournament. At that time the rules were different, and Brazil was only enough with a tie to lift the Jules Rimet.

The Brazilians were convinced that they would emerge victorious, but the Uruguayan team surprised and left speechless the crowd that had filled the Maracana with goals from Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia.

Brazil had quickly taken the lead and the stadium was falling apart, before all the souls that arrived at the mythical venue, whose construction was scheduled for 1949, but it took until 1950, when the World Cup was held. In 1946, it was decided to resume the competition, given what happened in the Second World War.

Uruguay matched it through Alberto Schiaffino, with a high and strong shot. However, Brazil was still world champion. At the end, the goal that was marked in the retina of sports lovers, the overflow and subsequent shot by Ghiggia, to Barbosa’s stick, silenced the giant from Rio de Janeiro.

In the particular memory of Maracana

In 1946 at the Luxembourg Congress, upon resuming the FIFA its activity paralyzed by the second world war, decided to give Brazil the venue for the world championship.

The idea was for it to be played in 1949. The delay in the construction of the Maracanã stadium led to the tournament being postponed for a year.

A dispute system with two phases was established, an initial one with four groups, and another where the classifieds of these would play the tournament, also playing all against all.
