Controversy in Peru over the refusal to install a “neutral” toilet at OAS meetings

Controversy in Peru over the refusal to install a "neutral" toilet at OAS meetings

The Foreign Minister of Peru asked on Friday Congress to reconsider its refusal to hold in Lima the 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS)due to the request for the installation of a “neutral bathroom”, after a controversy over gender issues was unleashed.

The Congress, dominated by conservative parties, rejected on Thursday night an agreement between the Government and the OAS to hold the appointment in the Peruvian capital between October 5 and 7 with an extra bathroom for those attending, in addition to services for the women and men.

“This seriously damages the international image of Peru. They are facilities only for this Assembly, without generating international obligations in the future,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, César Landa.
