Of the total shipments to the US during 2021, 66.6% were value-added, reported Adex

The Exporters Association () reported that exports went from US$ 4,729 million in 2009 – the year the FTA entered into force – to more than US$ 7,168 million last year, of which 66.6% were value-added products.

Although the last 2 years were complicated by the pandemic and a logistics crisis that pushed up the price of containers, preferential access to that market greatly helps the recovery of our shipments and therefore the growth of the country.

In addition, it allowed the consolidation of a commercial relationship with the world’s leading economic power, which remained the main destination for non-traditional Peruvian supply. Last year it concentrated 29.5% of the total of those shipments (US$ 4,771 million of US$ 16,155 million).

Likewise, according to figures from the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, these shipments went from representing 33% in 2009 to 66.6% last year, with a good performance of products such as blueberries and grapes.

The union mentioned the impact of the FTA on the quality of life of Peruvians, especially in the agricultural valleys of the coast where the growth of agro-exports generates full employment and has made the regions become important poles of development.

In its desire to strengthen the export chain, in 2021 ADEX held decentralized virtual forums in Huancavelica, Junín, Piura, Pasco, Ica, Tacna and Cusco, and plans to resume them this year.

In the same way, and in order to reach more buyers from the US and other countries, the Expoalimentaria will be held from September 21 to 23 at the Jockey Club Exhibition Center. It is the most important fair for food and beverages in Latin America, and a meeting point for key players in distribution, retail, horeca and specialized channels in the national and international market.

shared efforts

Thanks to the Peru-USA FTA. and the work of the private public sector, the northern country remained in 2021 as the main market for value-added supply (29.5% of the total), followed by the Netherlands, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia.

Total exports totaled US$ 7,168 million 140,000 and registered an increase of 15.1%, of which US$ 2,397 million were of primary products (increase of 0.8%) and little more than US$ 4,771 million of non-traditional products (variation of 24% ).

The most benefited value-added sectors were agribusiness, fishing for direct human consumption, chemicals, iron and steel, and non-metallic mining. Apparel, which has the US as its main destination, reduced its participation from 12% in 2009 to 10.3% last year.

The US has about 329,500,000 inhabitants in 50 states, the most populous being

California with more than 39,500,000 inhabitants, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia and North Carolina.

The data

The sectors that increased their shipments to the US the most – between 2009 and 2021 – were chemicals (502.3%), non-metallic mining (462.8%), agribusiness (372.2%) and iron and steel (337.3%).
