Congress observed a minute of silence for the death of Francisco Morales Bermúdez

The plenary session of the Congress of the Republic observed a minute of silence for the death of Francisco Morales Bermudezformer president of Peru who died on the night of Thursday, July 14, in a Miraflores clinic.

The request was made by the spokesman for the Avanza País bench, José Williams, who highlighted the work that the former president had during his time in the Armed Forces and the government, as well as his role in the preparation of the song “Contigo Perú” by Augusto Polo Campos.

After the minute of silence, Congresswoman Isabel Cortez, from Democratic Change – Together for Peru, complained about the gesture by pointing out that the former president was responsible for murders.

“It is unfortunate that we pay tribute to a person who has suffered in those years, many people have been assassinated by that government, at that time. Children, women, the elderly have been killed by this man who died yesterday”indicated the congresswoman.

In response, the president of Congress, María del Carmen Alva, defended the minute of silence.

“Congressman Williams was short on all things. He missed the most important thing for me, personally, as an actionist. Morales Bermúdez overthrew General Velasco Alvarado who did us so much harm in that military dictatorship and thanks to him we returned to the democracy that we still have today”he replied.

Sentence against Francisco Morales Bermúdez

In February of this year, the Italian Supreme Court confirmed the life sentence against Francisco Morales Bermúdez for the disappearance of Italian citizens in the so-called Condor Plan that several Latin American dictatorships applied between the 70s and 80s.

The Italian justice thus rejected the request that was made to annul the sentences in the first and second degree to Morales Bermúdez, who turned one hundred years old in October and who, like almost all the accused, was prosecuted without appearing before the magistrates of that country.

Italy began to investigate two decades ago the murder and disappearance of Italian-Latin Americans in the Condor Plan and in 2007 requested the arrest of a total of 146 military members of the de facto government systems that were once in force in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay.
