MIAMI, United States. — The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) approved this Wednesday the request of the company American Airlines to resume its operations to several provinces of Cuba, the agency reported Reuters.
The four destinations chosen by American to restore flights to the interior of the Island are Varadero (Matanzas), Santa Clara (Villa Clara), Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.
A statement from the airline to which the British agency had access indicates that the flights to these four destinations “will improve service and access between the US and these points outside of Havana, after more than two years during which This service was suspended.
American Airlines added that it “will fulfill the public interest by offering and maintaining the best connectivity to Cuba through its hub in Miami and providing substantial competition to other US airlines serving Cuba.”
The regular flights of US airlines to airports in the interior of Cuba were suspended in December 2019 by order of then President Donald Trump, who during his term in office reversed the rapprochement between the US government and the regime in Havana, which began in 2014 by his predecessor, Barack Obama.
At the end of June of this year, American Airlines had asked the Department of Transportation to increase its trips to the Island, currently limited to the José Martí International Airport in Havana.
The company’s request came less than a month after Department of Transportation Order 2022-6-1 went into effect, repealing actions taken by the Trump administration between 2019 and 2020.
The suspension of flight restrictions to the Island is part of “the measures of the Biden administration announced on May 16 in support of the Cuban people.”
