Following the report of death threats from journalist Andersson Boscán, the Committee announced in 2020 is recalled.
The journalist of the digital medium ‘La Posta’ Andersson Boscan publicly denounced that he received threats against him, his wife and his daughters.
On December 10, 2021, in your morning space, Boscan allowed to listen to the audio of a call, in which the voice of a man is heard warning him to be careful because in Quito there are “30 boys” with his photograph and that of his wife to kidnap or assassinate them.
I urge the authorities
After this, Fundamedios urged the Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Government and the National Police to take the immediate and necessary actions to guarantee the life and integrity of the journalists Monica Velasquez and Andersson Boscan and their family environment.
LA HORA joins this request and rejects the threats of organized crime. It also reminds the Government of its responsibility for the protection and safety of journalists working in Ecuadorian territory.
A Protection Committee that was not met
In April 2020, a meeting was held between the Interinstitutional Committee of Protection of Journalists Ecuador and civil society.
There, the draft of the ‘Protocol of good practices for hedging in risk areas’ was worked on, proposed by the Ministry of Government, which is chaired by the Committee.
The function of this entity is to establish agreements, protocols and mechanisms to prevent and protect workers from communication. However, they have not been fulfilled. One of the main reasons was the instability of the Lenín Moreno government, in which the Committee was announced.
Subsequently, in September 2021, the Public Defender’s Office of Ecuador and the Communication Council signed a cooperation agreement to establish policies that allow the protection rights of journalists.
The objective of the agreement was that journalists have free legal advice and sponsorship in the judicial processes they face, for the exercise of their work.
Jeannine Cruz, president of the Communication Council, said – through social networks – that every time a communication worker is entertained, democracy is affected. He also detailed that the actions initiated by the Prosecutor’s Office are pending. (AVV)
