The former director of Security and Coexistence Gustavo Lealwho held the position in the management of Eduardo Bonomi at the head of the Ministry of the Interior, referred to the dissemination of crime figures for this first semester and criticized the increase in homicides.
“At the press conference he said that the policy is correct because crimes are going down, I think he is following a path similar to that of the captain of the Titanic, he does not want to admit that there is a failure,” he explained in an interview with 970 News (universal radius), referring to the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber. The first semester of 2022 there were 39% more homicides than in the same period of the previous year.
The ex-hierarch said to see with “some perplexity and concern” that despite the fact that the minister presented a plan to contain homicides, they increased by 39%. This plan was formulated and announced in mid-May this year.
“It seems to me that it cannot be said that the policy is correct if there is a 39% increase in murders. But the minister, in addition to fighting with reality, has fought with the entire government because he assumed that the pandemic had an impact in the drop in crimes (…) He has little support left if he assumes this line, “he valued.
On the other hand, he wondered if there is indeed a plan to contain the homicides, since the minister himself said that some of them could not be prevented. “If a minister says that he cannot prevent violence…”, Leal ironized and warned: “The minister is not responsible for so much verbiage without content.” In turn, he maintained that the minister “has to assess if he is in the right place and if he wants to be in that place.”
In addition, he affirmed that there are constant comparisons with the management of the Broad Front, which “they always blame”. “I see a government that, with 900 days remaining and with almost 50% of the time elapsed, one day in and another is also the fault of the Broad Front (…) Not even 2019 is an excuse“, he said referring to the fact that there were more homicides in the first half of 2022 than in the same period of 2019.
