93.4% of the population of Mérida is poor, according to NGO Promedehum

The data obtained in Mérida were compared with the average for the rest of the country, which allowed Promedehum to determine that the entity was below the national average in different areas.


A report published by the NGO Promotion of Education and Defense of Human Rights (Promedehum) revealed that until March 2022, 93.4% of the population of Mérida was in a situation of poverty.

The study, calledSituation of Human Rights in Venezuela‘, detailed that specifically the condition of “extreme poverty” applied to 68% of the population, while “multidimensional poverty” for 67%.

In this sense, the report warned that the general poverty rate decreased timidly compared to the two subsequent years, but in contrast, extreme poverty increased in this population.

For the publication, the Promedehum team interviewed 6,641 family groups in 19 states of the country. They got 20,256 responses in March 2022.

The organization’s director, Rigoberto Lobo, explained to Radio Faith and Joy data from Mérida, where its headquarters are located, were contrasted with those from the rest of the country.

This made it possible to determine that Mérida was below the national average in different areas, such as mobility, since in 28.1% of the households surveyed at least one member of the family migrated. The national average stands at 20.3%.

In terms of nutrition, only 28.4% of the population assures that they acquire enough food, while 32.9% affirm that they consume a deficient quantity, 22.4% consider that their intake is scarce and 16.3 % which is very scarce.

24.2% of the population highlights that they do not have a budget for food expenses, while the national average is 22.7%. 56.2% of those surveyed guaranteed that they invest all their income in food.

In terms of public services, electricity is one of the main torments for the Merida population. 69% of the families expressed having severe failures in the electrical service. Despite this, a minority is evident compared to the data for June 2021, when the figure was 74.8%.

“Faults in the electricity service affect differently in the national territory, the states with the highest percentage of severe faults for March 2022 were Mérida with 75.2% and Táchira with 69.5%, which represents an increase in comparison to June 2021 with 69.1% and 58.8% respectively”, highlights the report.

Merida residents denounced that they also have severe failures with other electrical services. In the case of domestic gas by cylinders, 59.1%; in terms of urban cleaning, 44.9%; in terms of public transport, 30.7%; and for mobile telephony 39.2%.
