People agree with increasing the tax on sugary drinks (juices and soft drinks) and even more so, 83 percent approve the measure if the money collected is allocated to the prevention and care of diseases, stated the organization El Poder del Consumidor based on results of the survey carried out by the Dinamia agency.
The civil group reiterated its demand that legislators approve a tax of 7 pesos per liter of sugary drink during the discussion of the 2026 Income Law, as recommended by international organizations.
The survey, which included interviews with 1,500 individuals in the country, found that 40 percent accepted that they drink soft drinks at least once a day and nine out of 10 believe that these products are harmful to health.
More than half of respondents (56 percent) indicated they were in favor of increasing taxes; 88 percent mentioned that the prevention of obesity and diabetes should be a priority for the federal government and the consumption of junk products and sugary drinks should be discouraged.
More than half pointed out that the industry is responsible for the existence of foods without any nutritional contribution, which, on the other hand, are harmful and cause the development of diseases, the care of which is high cost.
The survey revealed that 89 percent of people agree that the government and Congress of the Union prioritize health over the interests of the ultra-processed food and beverage industry.
In turn, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) announced the launch of the Sapiens Mex Tabaco site, where there will be information and evidence on the tax, packaging and labeling policies of these products in Mexico. The objective is to strengthen the data that supports the importance and need for legislators to approve the increase in the consumption tax to 3 pesos per cigarette.
