83% of Panamanians think they will not have a job for the next six months

For the next six months, Panamanians are unlikely to get a job due to the unemployment crisis that the country is experiencing due to covid-19, revealed the latest Panamanian Consumer Confidence Index (ICCP) in its measurement for the month of March 2022.

According to the ICCP, the perception of unemployment marks an index of 83 percentage points, 2 percentage points above the previous measurement of January 2022.

For the measurement of March 2022, the perception remained discouraged, since 55% consider that it is unlikely to obtain a job, 28% consider that they will not have a job, 3% think that they will have a job, while 14% believe that it is quite likely that they will have, and 1% do not know if they will have.

The opinions arise from the survey of Panamanians over 18 years of age, of both sexes, with monthly family incomes greater than $400.

The survey included the entire national territory, with the exception of the province of Darién and the indigenous regions, in which informality exceeds 50%.

The ICCP also shows that “the level of consumer confidence remains low, despite the decline in cases due to the new variant of the virus.”

Expectations about the probability of saving money remain at levels of mistrust, presenting a result of 57 points, with an increase of 6 percentage points compared to the January 2022 measurement.

While the expectation of consumers about the economic situation of their homes remains at 105 points, which reflects that the perception of the future remains above the confidence line.

The indicator on the prospects for the country’s general economic situation for the next 12 months increased by 2 percentage points, going from 102 (January 2022) to 104 points (March 2022). These results show a slight increase in the level of confidence, according to the ICCP.
