MADRID, Spain.- An 82-year-old Cuban woman managed to cross the Rio Grande this weekend after facing the strong currents of the river.

From Nicaragua they crossed the borders of several countries until they reached Mexico. From there they crossed the river through Eagle Pass, in Texas.
“We had many difficulties, but at last we arrived. (…) I almost couldn’t stand it. When they found me I thought I was going to die. She was dehydrated. They gave me water, they put water on my neck to make me feel better,” said the old woman.
On the reasons that led her to make this risky decision, the lady referred to the economic conditions she suffered on the Island and the repression.
“Well, we over there don’t have the freedom to express what we feel. They even took my checkbook from me, they left me with nothing,” explained Marta.
While his grandson declared: “The reality is that the politics that exists there squeezes you, suffocates you. (…) On July 11 we went out to try to defend our rights, and we were persecuted”.
