Santo Domingo.-80% of extortion originates in the prisons of the Dominican Republic, declared this Saturday the general director of Penitentiary Services, Roberto Santana.
The official spoke during the inauguration of the first stage of the Las Parras Correction and Rehabilitation Center, located in the San Antonio de Guerra municipality.
In that sense, Santana affirmed that in this new penitentiary center, the criminals will not be in charge, but the Dominican State.
Likewise, he assured that the center has trained, “integrity and honest” personnel, who, in turn, are permanently monitored “so that they do not make mistakes.”

“We will have a center operated by specialized multidisciplinary personnel. Everyone who is here first went through the school eight months ago and, along with this, there is an adherence to doctrine,” declared the mayor.

The new facility has a monitoring center, automated access controls, video surveillance systems, sensors and specific areas for special forces.
It also has an internal courtroom to facilitate judicial processes without the need for risky transfers, educational classrooms, sewing workshops and churches.
Likewise, it includes areas equipped for children and conjugal visits, with controlled supervision.

The Ministry of Housing intervened in the work with an investment of more than 2.3 billion pesos.


“We set out to solve them efficiently and guaranteeing that the infrastructure met the highest standards of security and functionality,” declared Minister Carlos Bonilla.
Present were the president of the Commission for Monitoring the Penitentiary Reform Plan, Jorge Subero Isa, the director of Indotel, Guido Gomezand the deputy attorney, Rodolfo Espiñeira.
