A 77-year-old woman was bitten by a 7-foot-long alligator and taken to a hospital in West Florida. This was reported this Sunday by the agency in charge of the conservation of the fauna of this state.
They have not reported so far the condition of the woman or the severity of her injuries.
The Florida Wildlife Commission The FWC noted that the alligator attack occurred near a pond in a Manatee County gated community and that, once known, it sent a hunter to catch the reptile, as required by state law.
The captured alligator corresponds to the description of a witness of the attack on the woman.
“A person who witnessed the attack maintained eye contact with the alligator until it was caught.” This was stated by the FWC, which added that although there were other alligators in the area, they captured the one that corresponded.
The population of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in Floridaa species that from 1967 to 1987 was included in the list of endangered animals in the United States, now has about 1.3 million copies and has remained stable for decades.
77-year-old woman bitten by an alligator is not the only case
Although multiple encounters of these reptiles with humans occur near their homes, golf courses or highways, fatal attacks are rare, according to FWC data.
The most shocking case in recent times occurred on June 14, 2016 at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa hotel complex in Orlando (Florida), owned by Disney.
The 2-year-old boy Lane Thomas was dragged into the water by an alligator while he was with his family on the shores of an artificial lake
His parents jumped into the water and tried to free the boy from the jaws of the 2-meter-long alligator, but they were unsuccessful.
The body of the minor was found intact 16 hours later by divers at the bottom of the lake.
In early August 2022, an 80-year-old woman fell into a Florida lagoon and died after being attacked by two of these reptiles.
