The Brazilian government stopped the progress of seven gold inspection and extraction projects in some regions of the Brazilian Amazon that have been classified as protected areas in which indigenous communities reside.
The cancellation of these projects was mediated by President Jair Bolsonaro and advanced by the ministry of Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI), led by General Augusto Heleno Riberio, who authorized these projects in early December.
In a statement, the GSI explains that “considering the new technical and legal information (…) and that will be studied by the ANM (National Mining Agency), the minister, acting as executive secretary of the National Defense Council, has revoked the prior authorization certificates ”.
The projects were to be developed in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, located in the northwest of the state of Amazonas, specifically on the border with Colombia and Venezuela and where they reside at least 23 indigenous groups and the best preserved indigenous city in the country.
