64.5% of Dominicans avoid going out at night for fear of crime

Santo Domingo, (EFE).- 64.5% of the Dominican population avoids going out at night for fear of delinquency and crime, according to the results of the Enhogar-2022 survey.

The investigation also revealed that 29% of the population said they felt “very afraid” of criminal acts that take place in their neighborhood or community and that 20.8% felt “much more afraid” compared to 2021.

For these reasons, 52.8% of citizens between the ages of 25 and 34 stopped carrying “a lot of money” in cash and 38.7% stopped wearing jewelry in public spaces.

According to the survey, released by the National Statistics Office (ONE)23% of women do not feel at all safe walking alone through their neighborhood or community at night, a perception held by 18.4% of the male population.

The provinces with the highest percentage of the population aged 15 and over who stopped going out at night for fear of delinquency and crime are Santo Domingo (74.5%), Santiago with (74.2%) and the National District with ( 71%).

The National Police launched at the beginning of this month the first stage of the strategy called police patrols by quadrants, with the aim of reinforcing actions against delinquency and criminality.

More than fifteen suspected criminals have died this month in alleged exchanges of fire with police officers, whose director, Eduardo Alberto Then, recently warned that the institution of order will “vigorously” confront those who commit criminal acts.
