6-year-old boy arrested for shooting his teacher

At just 6 years old, an elementary school student is in custody after a shooting at Richneck School in Newport News, Virginia, United States, after shooting a teacher and sending her to the hospital.

The school is located at 205 Tyner Drive, near Jefferson Avenue.

As confirmed by Police Chief Steve Drew, the shooting occurred at about 2 in the afternoon on Friday, January 6.

Following the shooting, School Superintendent Dr. George Parker, III, said the elementary school will be closed on Monday, January 9.

Authorities indicated that the teacher is being treated at the Riverside Regional Medical Center. During a joint news conference with the mayor, Newport News police said the teacher has serious, life-threatening injuries to her.
