5G is getting closer to being a reality in Latin America, says Huawei

The company Huawei continues to bet on the digital transformation in Colombia. He stated so César Funes, Huawei’s vice presidents of public relations for Latin Americain an interview with Portafolio during the Mobile World Congresswhich runs until this Thursday in Barcelona.

How did Huawei do at Mobile World Congress?

This year what we show at the Huawei pavilion has been based on three main themes: the first is that 5G is a reality. This time we focus on showing many cases of its potential use. The second thing is the forward vision will be 5.5G, the next generation that will not only impact access to the mobile network, but also the transition, the core and the operation of companies. The third relevant issue has to do with being friendlier to the environment. In fact, in each element of innovation that we present, we try to make better use of energy.

(Further: ICT Ministry will have UN support for 5G auction).

How has the progress of 5G been in the region?

5G in Latin America is already a reality, it has even been evidenced through tenders submitted by countries such as Chile and Brazil. Likewise, services have been launched in Peru, the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago. For this year we heard very formal announcements from Uruguay, Argentina and Colombia, which shows us that the region is very involved in this progress.

What opportunities does having access to 5G offer for companies?

5G is not only going to help offer a better experience to end users, either through more capacity or by allowing more devices to connect simultaneously, in fact the expectation is that digital transformation can be enhanced. In this sense, all industries will benefit from the facilities it offers.

Likewise, the advanced technologies that we already know such as artificial intelligence, the cloud, big data, the internet of things will be enhanced. For example, industry 4.0 will be a reality in manufacturing, in ports and airports. Likewise, advances will be seen in verticals of the health sector.

What is the future of 4G and how do both technologies coexist?

4G is a technology that continues to be deployed, although some countries are more advanced than others, in Latin America 4G coverage exceeds 75% and we must reach 90%.

4G will continue to be present and will have to coexist with 5G simultaneously. In fact, there is a 5G deployment strategy, which has become very popular, where 4G investment is used and 5G begins to be introduced. Eventually, 5G will replace all of them, but just as we continue to see other technologies like 2G and 3G, we’re going to see 4G for a long time.

(We recommend: How much does Elon Musk’s satellite internet cost in Colombia?).

How was the work with the operators?

We have always worked closely with all operators, offering the most advanced, most cost-effective solutions, and we will continue to do so. And from Huawei we think that the Colombian market has a wide potential for the deployment of fiber optics, in fact we understand that it is a priority to continue promoting fiber optics, reach more areas with 4G, the integration of 5G and look for those use cases that can help Colombians in their day to day.

Our commitment to Colombia is long-term. There is no doubt that we will continue to offer great solutions, and above all, we will drive the deployment of digital infrastructure for the benefit of the new economy. For us, digital infrastructure combines connectivity and computing power. It is noteworthy that the vision of the company in the next generation is to have a fully connected world.

What is Huawei’s commitment to caring for the environment?

In addition to technology, Huawei’s focus is to have a lower impact on the environment. In each of our innovation elements we seek to have a better use of energy, with which we hope that there will be a sustainable vision of the development of digital transformation, starting with the equipment, moving on to the operation of the networks and allowing technology to allows us to protect the environment. That is why we are promoting the use of renewable energies such as photovoltaics, with specific solutions available on the market.
